About the practice workshop

What practice will I learn

In Hema Kannan's workshops, practitioners will learn the art of creating kolams, which involves drawing intricate patterns on the floor. Participants will explore different types of kolams, including geometric and sacred designs. Hema will guide them through the techniques, postures, and tools used in kolam making. They will gain an understanding of the cultural and historical context of kolams. The practitioners will also have hands-on experience in creating their own kolams, allowing them to develop their attention to detail.

Benefits of this practice

Kolam-making serves as a mindful and meditative activity that helps calm the mind, reduce stress, and promote mental wellbeing. The focused and repetitive nature of creating intricate patterns allows individuals to enter a state of flow, enhancing concentration and clarity. Additionally, kolams encourage patience and discipline, as they require attention to detail and perseverance to complete. This practice also serves as a form of self-expression and creativity, allowing individuals to explore their artistic abilities and connect with their inner selves.

Incorporating in my life

To practice kolam-making in a routine manner, the practitioner needs to set aside 15 mins every day in the morning, to create the kolam. Care should be taken to draw the kolam, focusing on each line and shape, allowing oneself to enter a state of mindfulness. Throughout the day, the kolam should be maintained, and when the time comes, it should be gracefully erased to embrace new beginnings.
