About the specialist

Pelva Naik is a highly accomplished young vocalist in the ancient Indian classical music form of Dhrupad, with over 14 years of experience. Born in 1986 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, she grew up in a family of artists and connoisseurs, nurtured by the rich virtues of Indian culture, literature, art, and music. Trained in the Dhrupad style under the eminent Dagar Gharana, she is a disciple of the legendary Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar and has also received guidance from Rudraveena maestro Ustad Mohi Bahauddin Dagar. Pelva’s music is deeply rooted in the traditional elements of Dhrupad, such as Alaapchaari, Meend, Raag-Swaroop, Shruti Bhed, and Jhala, while she also strives to cultivate fresh, personal characteristics in her performances. As a solo Dhrupad vocalist, Pelva believes in the importance of both performing and teaching this unique art form. She is passionate about sharing the nuances of Dhrupad with her students, offering a distinctive blend of traditional and modern techniques in her teachings. Pelva has performed at prominent music festivals, including the Darbar Festival in London, Theatre de la Ville in Paris, the Ravenna Festival in Italy, and the Festival de Fes in Morocco. Her natural ability to connect with audiences and students from diverse backgrounds has made her one of the most acclaimed and admired young Dhrupad teachers today.

  • Introducing musical notes (Swar) and their significance, explaining placement of notes (Swar Sthān's) role, and demonstrating with vocal exercises
  • Discussion on the principle energy centers within the body and their connection to Swar Sthān

Session 2

Master self-expression through in-depth Kharaj Sādhana, Moorchhanna, and Merukhand comprehension
  • Explore Kharaj Sādhana's (practice of lower pitch in Indian music) role in inner harmony while leading exercises for lower pitch exploration, fostering a heightened vocal connection
  • Introducing Moorchhanna (adding special touches to musical notes) and its musical purpose, followed by practical skill-building exercises
  • Introduction to Merukhand (creative way of mixing notes in Indian classical music) and its significance

Session 3

Dhrupad Syllables, Rāga, and Raga Sargam

  • Explanation of Bandish (composition) and its role in Indian classical music to cultivate self expression followed by step-by-step approach to creating a simple Bandish
  • Explore the essence of Taāl (rhythm) and its role in fostering introspection, while also discussing the integration of rhythm into daily vocal practice
